A Message From the Principal
Jonathan G. VanderEls

Welcome to the Memorial Elementary School webpage!

We are continually striving to improve our methods of communication with our community.  It is due to the hard work of teachers here at this school that you are able to access these sites, and we hope you find them useful!

As Principal, it is my pleasure to work with the dedicated and professional staff we are fortunate to have here at Memorial School.  As a staff, we are constantly reflecting on current practices while continuing to research new practices, in an effort to ensure we are providing each and every student with the best possible educational experience, as well as the support each individual needs to succeed.  We continue to follow the curriculum guidelines set forth by the Sanborn Regional School District and the State of New Hampshire in our planning and execution of the integrated, differentiated lessons that accomplish these goals.

It is our objective to provide each individual the academic knowledge, social skills, and self-confidence needed to be a productive member of our communities.  Our classrooms define the expected behaviors within each class and the school community as a whole and model these ideals in various ways based upon the “Responsive Classroom” model.  Respect and responsibility are traits that are visibly present in our teaching and learning throughout the school.

Memorial School fully recognizes the team effort needed for this to be a success.  We encourage our community members to be involved in this process and greatly encourage parents to be active participants in their child’s education.  There are many opportunities for this, from volunteering at our school, being a member of our strong Parent Teacher Organization, attending Parent/Teacher conferences, or simply staying in contact with your child’s teacher.

Thank you for taking the time to visit with us.  We hope you have found the experience valuable.

From the Vice-Principal
Donna Johnson

Newton Memorial School is one of four schools in the Sanborn Regional School District.  Memorial School offers a quality education to 351 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.  It is a school community comprised of 20 classrooms, a cafeteria/gym, a media center and portable computer lab with 23 wireless Dell laptop computers.

It is my great pleasure to work with a group of professional educators at Memorial School that practice the Responsive Classroom model through use of the "morning meeting" as well as responsive language and community building. Teachers also utilize the Four Blocks Program and 6+1 Writing Traits  ensuring a consistent focus on literacy throughout the curriculum.  Everyday Math, a researched base math program, provides instruction to students in grades 1 – 5.  Our staff is also deepening their expertise in Differentiated Instruction to accommodate the range of instructional levels in our classrooms. Grade level teachers work daily during the literacy block with Special Educators, the Reading Specialist and the Enrichment teacher to ensure that small group, specialized reading and writing instruction is provided for all children.  Memorial School has embraced the DIBELs and NWEA MAP test to assess student progress and the impact of district initiatives.

I am constantly amazed by the work of Memorial School’s Parent Teacher Organization.   They are viewed by all as a valued resource in our school community. They have consistently earned the NH Blue Ribbon Award for a high level of volunteerism and also conduct social and school fundraising activities throughout the year.  They sponsor field trips and an assembly for each grade level and are generous with their donations of time, money, and necessities for our teachers.  They are working teachers this year to support a Recycling Program, Environmental Club and enrichment programs such as the First Lego League and Invention Convention.

The teachers and staff at Memorial School are dedicated to meeting the educational needs of our students in a safe and supportive environment.  I am honored to be able to work with such wonderful students and adults each day!
